Peyton Manning passed his first test in looking solid in beating the Pittsburgh Steelers in his first game, but now the Denver defense may be more important facing Matt Ryan and the Falcons. Atlanta looked solid in their opening win scoring 40 points and that game was on the road. Now they are at home where they are tough to beat in the Georgia Dome. However, Manning knows a thing or 2 about playing in domes after all his years with the Colts.
In their opening games the Falcons beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-24 and the Broncos beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-19.
In their first game the Broncos covered the spread and the total went Over and the Falcons also covered with the posted total going Over.
Manning was solid in the first game going 19/26 for 253 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT. Both Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker had solid games with Thomas hauling in a 71-yard bomb for a TD and for the game averaged 22 yards per carry. While the Falcons did give up 241 passing yards to the Chiefs they did come up with 2 picks and the pass rush had 3 sacks.
Willis McGahee had a solid game, but not a great one and he will be facing a decent Atlanta run defense, but they did not look great in the Chiefs game. KC’s Jamaal Charles rushed for 87 yards averaging a legit 5.4 yards per carry against Atlanta, but the Chiefs had to go to the air to try to make a comeback.
Matt Ryan had a stellar first outing passing for nearly 299 yards with 3 TD and 0 INT and his offensive line played great only allowing 1 sack in the game. The Broncos’ secondary, which played decent in the win over the Steelers, will have their hands full in this game trying to keep up with the great WR duo of Julio Jones and Roddy White.
Ryan will have to watch out for CB Tracy Porter, who had a pick 6 in the first game against the Steelers.
One concern is the rushing game since Denver held Pittsburgh to only 75 rushing yards and Michael Turner really struggled to run the ball against the Chiefs. If he cannot move the chains with his legs Ryan will have to do it all on offense again.
